About Dyslexia Tutoring

This tutoring style uses spelling as a tool to enable a child to utilize his memory and imagination to assist them to learn.   In simple terms, I’m using their gift of memory and imagination and making it their learning style and bring their ability to the forefront. Then they can use their particular learning style to attain competency in reading, writing, and spelling. Individual needs are recognized within the lessons.

Literacy is the yard stick by which the intelligence of our children are rated within our education system.   Without reading, writing, and spelling skills to at least match their chronological ages dyslexics in most schools have little chance of reaching their potential.   As a consequence they are condemned to a life at school of being regarded as low achievers, and seldom given opportunities to demonstrate their cognitive strengths.

In undertaking successful fun lessons using this style,  dyslexic students can regain self-confidence in their abilities and move forward in their literacy level thereby succeed in the educational system. It helps open their minds to the world of words and puts back the fun in learning.

Auditory perception
Auditory perception, being able to hear and perceive the sound of the word is one of the major problems that dyslexic children face.  During a successful lesson sounds of words are discussed and played with thus helping the understanding of why words are written the way they are.

Many of the words in the English language are not spelt as they are said,  so not only does the students need to learn the correct pronunciation of word but learn visually words that are spelt differently than their sounding.  Learning their sound and blends is one of the first steps, and this is a totally visual task.

Visualisation of the written word is a task that is taught and reinforced using the audio visual books.  As a dyslexia child has such great difficulty with the written word reading is by far the last task he or she wants to do, causing a vicious cycle where by they don’t obtain practice in reading and there by take longer to prefect the art of reading.  By allowing the eye to glide over the written word using the CD and taking away the tension and anxiety the visual channels for word recognition are opened and progress happens.  It also trains the eye to follow the words from left to right and bring the eye from the end of the line down to the following line.  For a fluent reader this may seem like a simple task, but it is one of the frustrating things I found when reading was just keeping track of which line I was on.  Listening to the written word at a reasonable speed, starts to increase the comprehension.  A successful fun lesson presents the written words in a visual way.

As the child’s word recognition increased and, as the auditory and visual channels start to open this is the fun time watching your child almost change before your eyes.  Their self-confidence will lift, they will start reading almost before your eyes, their academic achievements start climbing and their overall outlook on life is lifted, the sparkle appears back in their eyes and self-esteem blossoms.
